Description

The objective of this lecture is to present to the students an overview of intelligent tools and techniques for transport planning and optimization in urban areas. The lecture will focus on innovative solutions in intelligent transport systems (ITS) in European smart cities.
Lecture presented to the student will be focused on the following sub-topics:
1. The policy framework for ITS deployment - the ITS Directive and Action Plan;
2. The six ITS action areas:
  - Optimal use of road, traffic and travel data;
  - Continuity of traffic and freight management ITS services on European transport corridors and in conurbations;
  - Road safety and security;
  - Integration of the vehicle into the transport infrastructure;
  - Data security and protection, and liability issues;
  - European ITS cooperation and coordination.
3. A role for computational and artificial intelligence in future ITS;
4. Know-how examples of EU cities.
The lecture is based on the following EU publications:
- Mobilising Intelligent Transport Systems for EU cities,Brussels, 17.12.2013, SWD(2013) 527 final;
- Intelligent Transport Systems in action - action plan and legal framework for the deployment of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Europe, ISBN 978-92-79-18475-8, doi:10.2832/44199

Impact Outcome of this teaching activity is that students should be able to recognize and understand huge impact of ITS and computational and artificial intelligence to urban mobility.
